Meta-analytic analysis of sanitary challenges on voluntary feed intake and growth of the pig The degradation of sanitary conditions has an impact on both technical and economical results of pig production. The aim of this work is to quantify the impact of sanitary challenges on voluntary feed intake and growth in the pig. A database was built from 87 scientific papers published between 1971 and 2008. It contains results from in vivo experiments realised on 11136 pigs in order to test the impact of challenge by bacteria, viruses or parasites, intoxication by mycotoxins, and poor breeding hygiene on voluntary feed intake and growth on the post-weaning, the growing stages and the finishing period. Dependant variables were adjusted using polynomial intra-study models. The challenges leads to decrease the growth more than the feed intake (12 and 8 %). The most important reduction of feed intake was observed with viral challenges and during the post-weaning stage. The most important reductions of growth were observed with bacterial and viral infections in post-weaning stage (-11 and -18 %) and with mycotoxins in finishing period (-27 %). Feed intake explained less than 10 % of the difference of the growth between challenged and control pigs. The characteristics of the challenges have great influence on animal responses. The database built will permit to study better the interactions between sanitary challenge and nutrition
