Analyse visuelle dynamique des formes dans le paysage. Premières approches à l’aide du suivi du regard.

Abstract : We consider the landscape as “(…)” a part of territory such as it is perceived by the populations, the characteristic of which results from the action of natural and/ or human factors and of their interrelations” (Council of Europe, 2ooo). Our sight provides eighty per cent of our environment stimulation and information. Our research, in an exploratory manner, studies the way we visually perceive the landscape and more specifically shapes. In reference to the recent findings of neurosciences in the field of vision, shapes constitute one of the three major components of the visible landscape along with color and movement. We analyzed the eye movements and particularly the sequence of eye fixations as repondant’s observed representations of the landscape by different persons. The eye fixation corresponds to the eye moment when we collect the visible information. The first results concerning the analysis of the eye tracking process confirm the important inter-individual variation for a similar visual stimulation and the importance of the observer’ s cultural experiences. Independently from our will, the shapes perceived in the landscape attract the gaze through an important light contrast between the substance and the shape, and through their location either in the foreground or at the horizon. And important morphologic structure such as lines of convergence towards “a vanishing point” seems to favor the visual attraction. This visual attraction is also reinforced by the semantic value associated with the object (designation and categorization of a well-known object). Priority, the recognition of a living being or of an object able to move which first takes place as well as what can be a source of pleasure or of danger. Without conscious effort, the attention of the observer can equally orientate the selection of the visual information to prepare the forthcoming action.
